WHY USE DOMINOES AS A MATH MANIPULATIVE?
Dominoes really help to make abstract concepts concrete, enabling teachers and parents to accommodate children who learn in different ways from one another. When struggling to grasp or discuss difficult concepts, young children can become easily frustrated. Having items that students can touch and manipulate will make a real difference in their ability to understand and problem solve. When given the opportunity to learn and make mistakes in a friendly game situation, children learn to ask appropriate questions. Dominoes, dice and playing cards are perfect for whole class, small group and center games. Manipulatives make practice livelier and are not only part of “instruction time” but are used to discuss during the “post game” activities. This ultimately leads to further understanding and increases the student's overall math confidence.
Using dominoes in the elementary classroom is more exciting than tasks that focus on rote memorization of basic facts. When children enjoy what they are learning they are more likely to retain and understand new information. Dominoes, dice and playing cards engage, intrigue and motivate even the most reluctant learners, helping them to become more confident and self assured. The combination of real-world contexts, mental imagery and manipulatives, brings success to problem solving as students move from using models to reasoning. Happy, successful students are more willing to take on new challenges, using higher level thinking skills.
By learning how to use a variety of manipulatives, children develop a “backpack” of ideas for solving problems and they can think about ideas and concepts in new and different ways.
The games from both Connecting The Dots and Linking The Learning are perfect for sending home for homework support. Both game books are filled with simple to follow game rules and blackline masters for reproducing.
